What is Performance Assessment?
Performance Assessments provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding of important concepts in a unit of study through visual, written and/or oral responses. When they are embedded into the instructional program in each classroom they provide teachers with immediate and comprehensive information about student learning.
What is the New Jersey Performance Assessment Alliance Project?
The NJ Performance Assessment Alliance Pilot Project was created to
accomplish these three goals:
Goal No. 1: To assure a balanced and broader approach in the state
assessment system, including state administered standardized tests and
district administered performance assessments, with equal weight given
to each for state and federal reporting and accountability.
Goal No. 2: To foster the use of instructional strategies that lead to
increased student understanding of important skills, ideas and concepts
included in the N.J. Core Curriculum Content Standards.
Goal No. 3: To develop high quality performance assessments that are aligned
to the N.J. Core Curriculum Content Standards in each of the content areas.
Participants in Phase V (2007-2008) of the project will administer (field test) valid, reliable performance assessment tasks in selected subjects of the Core Curriculum Content Standards, at grades 3, 6, 8 and 11. Approximately 100 school districts, representing a cross-section of New Jersey, will be participating in 2007-2008. The teachers in these districts, under the leadership and guidance of Christine Kane, Pilot Project Director, and a staff of consultants, will field test, score, and, possibly, refine performance assessment tasks. Hundreds of teachers and thousands of students will be involved in this fifth year of the project.
All NJPAA Professional Development programs and courses are designed to satisfy the criteria and requirements for travel, the requirements for Professional Growth Plans and the New Jersey Standards for School Leaders.
